A release focused on long tasks and tools

Moonshot AI released Kimi K3.1 Pro on October 23, 2026, as the first member of its K3.1 series. The model is already available through Kimi, Kimi Work, Kimi Code and the API. Its proposition combines a context window of up to one million tokens with improvements in coding, 3D creation, financial research and tasks involving several linked actions. K3.1 Pro Highspeed joins it as a variant intended to reduce waiting during those interactions.

For a development team, the practical question is whether the model can carry work from an initial request to a verifiable result: understanding a repository, modifying files, running tools and interpreting errors. A persuasive chat answer covers only part of that journey. The appeal of this release lies in sustaining a task and correcting course, something that needs testing against the particular project.

3T-class scale and the distinction from Kimi K3’s 2.8T

The official description calls K3.1 Pro a 3T-class model, with T meaning a trillion parameters. This describes a scale category rather than publishing an exact count of 3,000,000,000,000 parameters. Kimi’s model table distinguishes that description from the 2.8T explicitly attributed to Kimi K3, the previous-generation flagship.

K3.1 Pro is a post-trained version of K3, with greater compute invested at that stage. That relationship does not automatically establish every internal figure documented for its predecessor. The Pro announcement supplies neither a new exact count of total and active parameters nor confirmation there of a particular number of experts selected per token. Total size alone also does not establish the cost of serving the model.

Aspect Kimi K3.1 Pro
Announced scale 3T-class; no exact count in the announcement
Relationship to K3 Version with expanded post-training
Advertised context Up to one million tokens
Faster variant K3.1 Pro Highspeed
Current access Kimi services and API
Full weights Release announced for no later than November 4, 2026

What the coding and finance results show

In results published by Moonshot, K3.1 Pro scores 65.7% on Terminal-Bench 4.0, an evaluation of agents completing terminal tasks with resource limits and task-specific tests. The same comparison reports 66.4% for Claude Opus 5.5 and 58.2% for GPT-6 Astra. This helps position the release, although an individual score cannot establish a winner across every repository and environment.

Model Terminal-Bench 4.0, results published by Moonshot
Claude Opus 5.5 66.4%
Kimi K3.1 Pro 65.7%
GPT-6 Astra 58.2%

The company also reports 61.2% on its internal Kimi Code Bench 3.0 Long-horizon evaluation, compared with K3’s 55.95%. For OfficeQA Pro v2, it reports a score of 64.4, covering complex questions about financial documents. These measure different tasks: their numbers should neither be added together nor treated as an overall percentage of intelligence or accuracy.

These are evaluations presented by the developer, rather than independently reproduced by Inferama. Comparing work tools also requires attention to instructions, permissions, available tests, allowed time and cost per completed task. A useful evaluation keeps those factors consistent and examines the final artifact, rather than just the model’s account of what it did.

A million tokens still requires context selection

The wider window allows more documentation or code in a single session. For example, changing a programming interface may benefit from including its specification, its consumers and integration tests together. Accepting a large input, however, does not guarantee finding every detail or correctly connecting all dependencies.

It helps to define the objective, identify relevant files and request verifiable outputs. In a software migration, a concrete check would run tests before and after the changes, inspect behavioral differences and measure remaining failures. Uploading an entire repository without a precise question can increase latency and cost without improving the decision. In Kimi Code, available context also depends on the plan: the advertised maximum does not apply to every tier.

05

API access, Highspeed and cost per completed task

The API platform guide uses kimi-k3.1-pro and kimi-k3.1-pro-highspeed as model identifiers. Kimi Code uses k3.1-pro and k3.1-pro-highspeed in its own configuration. Choosing the correct identifier and service avoids confusing a coding subscription with API billing. Their quotas and terms need checking separately.

The provider advertises roughly two to three times the speed for Highspeed. That can matter in interactive sessions, but it does not itself imply a lower price. Final cost depends on input and output tokens, caching, reasoning and tool calls. A representative trial should measure time and spending until a solution passes its checks, including unsuccessful attempts.

In Kimi Code, Pro requires thinking mode to remain enabled; disabling it returns an error. The documentation also recommends starting a new session when changing generations. These integration details have practical consequences: an unsuitable configuration can look like a model limitation when it actually prevents using the model as intended.

06

Service access and weight availability are separate stages

As of October 27, the announcement schedules full weights for release by November 4, 2026. API access already exists; that availability does not demonstrate that the model files have been published for download and deployment on your own infrastructure. Announced openness and actual local execution need separate assessment.

A self-hosted deployment requires checking the files eventually distributed, their license, formats, inference-engine compatibility and memory consumption. A large architecture does not automatically become suitable for a consumer GPU because it uses sparse activation. For a decision today, the verifiable path is to evaluate the available service and reserve local infrastructure estimates for distribution specifications that have actually been published.

K3.1 Pro broadens the alternatives for teams needing coding agents and extensive context. Its value depends on the quality of the result for a particular job, ease of integration and operating cost. A trial using real tasks, acceptance criteria and inspection of the changes provides a stronger basis than selecting on parameter count alone.
